TDM1 Game Review: Oxaco BBC – Gembo Borgerhout (10/10/2020)

Next up came the Antwerp derby between Oxaco Boechout and the visitors from Gembo Borgerhout.

In a game that remained close throughout the opening half it was the home-team Oxaco that took the slight advantage at the halftime break, leading it 42-36.

Oxaco continued their solid play in the opening minute of the second half and further increased their lead to double-digits before Gembo responded with a 0-6 run of their own. A technical foul by Gembo seemed to switch the momentum back into Oxaco’s favor as they went back up by 6 but it didn’t last long. Van Den Hemel and Goetgeluck placed another spurt for Gembo and tied the game up 53-53 halfway the third. From then on both teams went back and forth to eventually end the third quarter on the 64-65 score.

And then suddenly Gembo got rolling on the offensive end. Threes by Van Den Hemel, Goethaert and Goetgeluck ignited the visitors and yet another bucket by a strong playing Van Den Hemel gave Gembo the 9 point lead (69-78) halfway the final quarter. From then on it was pretty much all Gembo as they continued to run out and ended the game with the 81-97 victory.

Anthony Goetgeluck was the main man for the winners and our Player of the Game as he finished with 25 points, 5 assists, 4 steals and 3 rebounds. Laurens Van Den Hemel came through in the second half and ended up with 24 points off the bench. Arno Mollekens (13 points) and good old Tomas Goethaert (11 points) ended up in double-digits scoring as well, while Bryan De Valck added 8 points & 11 rebounds in their season-opening win.

For Oxaco it was Bert Van De Broek who put down a very strong game as he recorded the 19 points & 19 rebounds Double-Double. Nick Celis was also omni-present with 18 points & 7 assists. Mark De Meyer chipped in with a Double-Double of his own as he finished with 17 points & 11 rebounds. Unfortunately they only got 16 points from their entire bench (compared to 44 bench-points for Gembo). With this loss Oxaco now holds a 1-1 record on the season.
